Get Outdoors

Sometimes we forget about all the great resources we have in and around Memphis. Many of our natural resources are over-looked as a source of fun. We should really be taking a little time to re-introduce ourselves to the beauty that surrounds us in our own hometown. After all, human powered recreation is the cheapest of all recreation. Why not utilize the places around us?

Shelby Farms Park: Now that the Greenline connecting Binghampton to Shelby Farms is finished, you really have no. Shelby Farms is well equipped with most everything you would want to do: trail running/walking, paddling, disc golf, horseback riding, cycling trails, a dog park for off the leash playtime, and more.

Wolf River: If you haven’t cruised through the Wolf River in a canoe or kayak during the Spring or Fall, you absolutely must try it. Take a group of friends, family, or just roll solo through the forest. It is shaded and serene. No better way to spend a Saturday.

Mississippi River
: If hundreds of people float the Memphis section of the Mississippi River for a race once a year, then we should have many groups paddling on the river every week. We have at our doorstep, one of the greatest rivers in the world, and yet we still do not utilize our resource to its fullest potential.  Although paddling the Mississippi River can prove to be challenging to even an experienced paddler, this doesn’t mean it is completely unconquerable. Let’s do it!

Lichterman Nature Center
: “I remember going there as a kid”. Okay, why not go back and relive some memories? Many homegrown Memphians remember their early childhood field trips to Lichterman Nature Center. Fond memories of exciting exhibits and wildlife watching are what should inspire a visit back to Lichterman Nature Center. A nature walk through the area might be just what you need after a long week at work.

Meeman-Shelby Forrest State Park
: A little bit more of a drive from the city, Shelby Forrest holds trails, wildlife, fishing spots and a lake perfect for paddling around on a casual afternoon.

William B. Clark Conservation Area: Just around an hours drive from Memphis, you will find the William B. Clark Conservation Area containing approximately 500 acres of bottomland hardwood forest in the Wolf River floodplain.  Be sure to bring a camera when you visit.
